I own the first Ultimate Alliance, and I enjoyed it, but the idea’s behind Borderlands seem so compelling. So, which one of the two should I get?

If you are interested in both games, why not buy both? If you can only afford one. I would say buy Borderlands, because it is going to be such a long game, that you won’t be able to finish it as a rental.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 won’t have that long of a playtime, so you can probably get it as a rental and finish before you have to return it.
