I’m going to Iraq sometime in the future and was wondering what I can take. I know I’ll need all my basic issue, but I’m talking about a portable DVD player, etc. Also, can I bring my own loadout bag or do they usually say, "You can take two military issued duffle bags and THAT’S IT!"??

I’ve read that I should grab a Pelican 1510 for breakables also. And then there’s the rucksack…I have an ACU camo one that is MUCH better than the issue one. Could I bring that instead of the ALICE pack? The one I have holds more and has a better frame and belt than the ALICE one.

I did ask my chain of command about this but they are too busy with more pressing issues than this at the moment. (Not being sarcastic…they really do have a lot more important things to attend to…) Wanted to hear from those with direct experience that have been deployed. US Army, please…I’m sure the USMC, Navy, and AF have different rules.
Wow…I really appreciate all the good info here. Sounds like I need to keep the loadout light while in transit then.

Thanks!

I need a waterproof bag to place my survival gear into, and you guessed it. It needs to be able to survive West Oregon’s raining season. I live on the West coast of Oregon, near Rainier and Astoria so that may give you and idea of the conditions I’m talking about. If you don’t, it’s wet or raining most of the year, rain in Fall and Spring and rain and snow in Winter. I was going to order a Large or Medium ALICE pack to use as my bag (odds are large), the size would fit perfectly for what I need but then I realized just how damn wet it is around here most of the year. I know that ALICE packs are water-resistant but not waterproof, I know they also have waterproof liners to put in your bags but that’s only for the main hold, if I go liner then I’ll have to get three other waterproof bags, smaller of course for the three other pockets on the front. Should I go with this idea or is there another bag that will fit my needs? Thanks. P.S. This bag I plan to practically l live out of in the woods so it’s subject to weather almost 24/7 when I use it.

What’s the best backpack for a survivalist? I’ve been hearing an ALICE pack – http://i18.tinypic.com/2vayu76.jpg – is the way to go, but what do you think? I’m looking for something spacious, durable, and comfortable (and hopefully cheap).

im a former marine, and during boot camp, for swim qualification week, this marine gave a demonstration of a fully dressed marine with cammies and boots on, plus an ALICE pack, floating in the water, he used his ALICE pack as a flotation device, my question is, how did he do that?
not only did the ALICE pack floated, the marine instructor also was swimming, in full BDU’s, helmet , rifle and all, how did he do it? marines are truly "amphibious"! oorah!
